A Path To Success

Their Story

Collecting Data and Enriching Youth

MAPSCorps is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based on Chicago’s South Side where the idea was born. The organization grew out of the South Side Health and Vitality Studies, led by the research laboratory of Stacy Tessler Lindau, MD, MAPP, at the University of Chicago. Their mission is to train the youth to produce high-quality data about community assets that everyone can use to improve the human condition.

Their Objective

Increase User Engagement

MAPSCorps wanted to provide a user-friendly interaction on their mobile app for their mappers, teenagers who are trained to collect data in the community so that they can be effective at the data collection while using the engagement to train their youth workers on statistical principles.

Specific objectives were:

  • Increases mappers (youth) engagement and efficiency
  • Allows the program to scale to more cities while keeping the infrastructure costs down
  • Increase productivity of admin users

Their Challenge

Building an app that engaged teens

While there was an application in place, the preexisting version was not user friendly and engagement was low. In addition, the backend admin portal that was used by MAPSCorps administrators was also clunky and slowed their efforts.

  • Users are teenagers so it needs to be appealing to them (Usability was key)
  • Places, where mapping happens, does not always have connectivity so it needed to have offline support
  • The current architecture was not set up to scale without incurring a higher costs
  • The admin portal was very slow

A More Engaging App

Their Solution

Better Usage, Better Data

MAPSCorps Mobile app for iOS and Android devices was successfully released with a teen-friendly rich interface and resulted in youths mapping more places faster with or without access to the internet while maintaining data accuracy.

Some of the key features are:

  • Team and mappers progress
  • Mapping of new places
  • Mapping of existing places
  • Surveys execution
  • Offline support

In addition, the Admin portal was re-engineered and the response time was 3x faster.
Note: Both the mobile app and admin portal run on a serverless architecture in Azure

Their Development Experience

TangoCode’s work was very thorough, and success for the apps bode well. Customers can expect an organized team that goes the extra mile to understand their clients’ requirements.
